Faculty in San Antonio Calls For A Retreat From The “Madness of March” and A Return to Academic Integrity

On Saturday, April 3rd at 1:00pm, The Drake Group scheduled a press conference at the Holiday Inn
Riverwalk, Tango 1 Room to outline its reform agenda and the direct action it will take over the next year to
insure that college athletes have an opportunity to receive the educations they have been promised.
The Drake Group also presented its first Robert Maynard Hutchins Award to Jan Kemp, an English professor
formerly employed by the University of Georgia who was fired for speaking out against the preferential
treatment of athletes there in the 1980s.
The Drake Group members and supporters staged an informational and educational protest demonstration
outside the Holiday Inn Riverwalk on Sunday, April 4th from 1:00-4:00p.m. following its Annual Meeting at the
Days Inn-Coliseum Sunday morning. The purpose of the demonstration was to raise awareness and support
for proposals designed to rid college sports of the scandals that the public has come to associate with big-
time college sports. The Drake Group has pledged to meet at the Men’s Final Four in subsequent years until
such time as major reforms are achieved.
The Drake Group will be awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the International Scholar-Athlete
Hall of Fame this June.
